Jiaohe Ruins

Perched on a plateau in the basin of Turpan Basin (Xinjiang, China), Jiaohe Ancient City is the world’s largest, oldest and best-preserved earthen-architecture city. 

Founded around the 2nd century BC, it was once the capital of the ancient kingdom in the region and later thrived during successive dynasties, before being abandoned in the 14th century. 

The city — shaped like a “willow-leaf” on a natural earthen island between two rivers — includes remains of residential areas, government offices, temples and streets, all carved directly into the earth; in 2014 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
