Ice Cracks
Ice cracks are formed by the expansion and contraction of the frozen surface caused by temperature fluctuations, creating dramatic fissures that can extend for hundreds of meters. These shifts produce deep, resonant sounds, while the color, width, and pattern of the cracks vary with water depth, freezing conditions, and sunlight, resulting in a visually striking and ever-changing spectacle.

Ice Floe Formations
At the onset of winter, Lake Baikal’s surface begins to freeze. Strong winds can churn up waves, which instantly solidify upon contact with the cold, creating layered blocks of fractured ice. This spectacular natural phenomenon is known as the “ice floe formations.”
